We often hear the phrase “loving like Jesus,” but what does that truly mean? Is it just a warm feeling, or does it demand something more deep? Today, we’ll study John 3:16 and other scriptures to explore the depth of Jesus’ love and challenge ourselves to examine our own capacity for such radical love.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16

This well-known verse is the cornerstone of Christian belief. It tells us why God loved – “so loved” indicating the immense degree of His love – and what He did because of that love – He gave His Son. This wasn’t just any gift; it was the ultimate sacrifice. God gave up His Son, Jesus, to bridge the gap between humanity and Himself. This act of giving is the very essence of love as demonstrated by God.

What does John 3:16 tell us about the nature of God’s love?

Jesus’ Example:

Jesus perfectly exemplified this sacrificial love throughout His earthly ministry. He didn’t just talk about love; He lived it. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, comforted the brokenhearted, and forgave those who wronged Him. But His love went even further.

  • Sacrificial Giving: Jesus gave of His time, energy, and resources to minister to others. He often withdrew from crowds to spend time with His disciples, teaching and preparing them. He had compassion on the multitudes and miraculously provided for their needs (Matthew 14:13-21).

  • Willingness to Lay Down His Life: Jesus’ love culminated in His willingness to lay down His life for our sins. He knew the suffering that awaited Him, yet He willingly went to the cross. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13

How did Jesus demonstrate sacrificial love in His daily life?

If we are to truly love like Jesus, we must move beyond simply saying we love and demonstrate it through our actions. It means being willing to give of ourselves – our time, resources, and even our comfort – for the benefit of others.

  • Going Beyond Feelings: Love is more than just a feeling; it’s a choice, an action. There will be times when we don’t feel like loving someone, but true Christ-like love compels us to act regardless of our feelings.

  • Sacrifice and Service: Loving like Jesus often involves sacrifice. It may mean giving up our time to help someone in need, donating to a worthy cause, or forgiving someone who has hurt us. It’s about putting others’ needs before our own. Philippians 2:3-4 instructs us “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves…”

  • Extending Love to the Unlovable: Jesus loved the unlovable. He associated with tax collectors, sinners, and outcasts. He challenged the social norms of His time by showing compassion to those who were marginalized. We are called to do the same. Matthew 5:44 says, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.”

Where in your life are you being challenged to love more like Jesus? What practical steps can you take to demonstrate this love more fully?

This week, prayerfully consider how you are loving others. Are you simply saying you love, or are you demonstrating it through your actions? Identify one area where you can show more Christ-like love and commit to making a change.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank you for the perfect example of love that you have given us through Jesus. Help us to grow in our abilities to love like Him. Give us the strength to sacrifice our time, resources, and even our comfort for the sake of others. Help us to love not just those who are easy to love, but also those who are difficult. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
