Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy is a retelling by Moses of the teachings and events of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. is a series of Moses’ farewell address(es) to the new generation as they are now ready to conquer the Promised Land. He tells` them to obey the law of God, to apply its principles to the new challenges they would face, and to renew the covenant God had made with their fathers so that they could receive all of God’s blessings in the Promised Land.

Moses solemnly tells them to love and obey the one true God. There are blessings for faithfulness and curses for unfaithfulness. Joshua is chosen as Israel’s new leader after the death of Moses.

Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations”

1. Moses’s first address to the people (chapters 1-4)

  • History: Moses tell the people of the great things God has done for the. Freeing them from Egypt, and helping them and how Israel has disobeyed.

2. Moses’s second address to the people (chapters 4-28)


Moses gives the people principles for Godly living:

  • 10 Commandments Review
  • Love God + obey His commands
  • Laws for proper worship
  • Laws for ruling the nation
  • Laws for relationships
  • Consequences of obedience + disobedience

3. Moses’s third address to the people (chapters 29-30)

  • A call for the people to recommit to God

4. Changes in leadership (chapters 31-34)

  • Joshua takes over
