Love Came Down: the Birth of Jesus

Love Came down!!

2000 years ago, a tiny baby was born, a baby whose arrival changed the course of history. This study will explore the miraculous birth of Jesus and unpack the powerful message of the Gospel.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

-Isaiah 9:6

This prophecy, centuries before Jesus’ birth, foretells the coming of a special child, a son who would bear extraordinary titles: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These names point to the divine nature of this child and the incredible impact He would have on the world. This prophecy sets the stage for the miraculous event we celebrate at Christmas: the incarnation of God – God becoming man.

The Miracle of the Virgin Birth:

Matthew 1:18-25 recounts the miraculous circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. Mary, a virgin, was betrothed to Joseph when she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, a righteous man, considered divorcing her quietly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream, explaining that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and that He would save His people from their sins. This virgin birth is a cornerstone of the Christian faith, demonstrating the power and sovereignty of God.

Love came down!!

The birth of Jesus is the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity. “Love Came Down” from heaven to earth in the form of a tiny baby. This wasn’t just any baby; this was God Himself, stepping into our world, taking on human flesh, to bridge the gap between us and Him.

  • Love Came Down to Rescue Us: Humanity was lost in sin, separated from God. But God, in His infinite love, gave us a plan of redemption. He sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from the penalty of our sins. Galatians 4:4-5 states, “But when the set time had fully come,
  • Love Came Down to Give Us Eternal Life: Jesus’ birth wasn’t just about His earthly life; it was about His death and resurrection. He came to die for our sins, to pay the ultimate price so that we could have eternal life. John 3:16 powerfully declares, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotton Son, that whosoever believeth in him shoudl not perish but have everlasting life.”
  • Love Came Down to Dwell Among Us: The incarnation, God becoming man, shows us the depth of God’s love. He didn’t remain distant and aloof; He came down to live among us, to understand our struggles, and to offer us His comfort and guidance. Matthew 1:23quotes Isaiah’s prophecy, “‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’).”

The birth of Jesus is the beginning of the Gospel story. It’s the story of God’s love breaking into our dark world to offer us salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life. It’s a story of hope, love, and peace.

  • Hope: In a world filled with darkness and despair, Jesus’ birth brings hope. He is the light that shines in the darkness, offering us a way out of our brokenness.
  • Joy: The angels proclaimed “good news of great joy” at Jesus’ birth. This joy is available to all who accept Him as their Savior.
  • Peace: Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He offers us peace with God, peace within ourselves, and peace with others.

Prayer:

“Lord, thank you for the incredible gift of your Son, Jesus. Thank you for your love that came down to earth to rescue us. Help us to truly understand the depth of your love and to share this message of hope, joy, and peace with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
