What does the Bible say about the Power of our Words?

We often underestimate the power of our words. We speak without thinking, sometimes carelessly, sometimes even maliciously, forgetting that our words are not just empty sounds; they carry weight, they have power. Join us today, as we open the Book and explore what the Bible says about the impact of our words and the connection between our speech and our actions.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”

Proverbs 18:21

This verse is a stark reminder of the immense power held within our tongues. Our words are not neutral; they can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage, heal or wound. They have the power to bring life and hope, or they can unleash death and despair. The second part of the verse emphasizes the personal consequences: “those who love it will eat its fruit.” This means we will experience the results of our words, whether good or bad.

What does Proverbs 18:21 mean to you?

How have you seen the power of words in your own life or in the lives of others?

Words as Seeds:

Think of words as seeds. When we speak, we are planting seeds into the world, and those seeds will eventually sprout and bear fruit. Just as a farmer carefully chooses the seeds he plants, we should be mindful of the words we sow.

POSITIVE SEEDS?

  • Words of encouragement, affirmation, and love can nurture and inspire. They can build up confidence, motivate action, and bring healing to broken hearts.
  • “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24

OR

NEGATIVE SEEDS??

  • Words of criticism, gossip, and hatred can destroy and demoralize. They can create division, breed resentment, and inflict deep emotional wounds.
  • “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” James 3:5-6

How have positive words have impacted you? What about negative words?

Words and Actions: A Direct Link

Our words are not just fleeting sounds; they are connected to our actions. What we speak often becomes what we do. If we constantly speak negatively about ourselves, we are more likely to act in ways that reinforce those negative beliefs. Conversely, if we speak words of faith and hope, we are more likely to act in accordance with those positive affirmations.

WORDS=ACTIONS

  • Our words can become self-fulfilling actions. If we repeatedly say we can’t do something, we are less likely to even try. But if we speak words of confidence and determination, we are more likely to succeed.
  • Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” This is a powerful affirmation we can speak over ourselves.

INNER THOUGHTS = OUTER ACTIONS

How do your words reflect what is going on in your heart? How can you cultivate a heart that speaks life-giving words?

Controlling Our Tongue:

Controlling our tongue is not easy. It requires constant vigilance and self-discipline. But it is essential if we want to live a life that honors God and blesses others.

Prayer:

  • Ask God to help you control your tongue. Pray for wisdom and discernment in your speech. Psalm 141:3 says, “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips“.
  • What does it mean to “set a watch” over our mouth? The dictionary defines the word “watch” as to look at or observe attentively over a period of time, or to exercise care, caution, or  restraint about something.

Mindfulness:

  • Be mindful of what you are saying before you say it. Take a moment to think about the potential impact of your words. Watch what you say!

Practice:

Practice speaking words of kindness, encouragement, and love. The more you practice, the easier it will becomes.

Challenge:

This week, make a conscious effort to watch what you say. Pay attention to the words you use, both to others and to yourself. Choose to speak words that build up, encourage, and bring hope to the dark world around you. Speak life!!

Prayer ❤

Lord, help us to understand the power of our words. Help us to control our tongues and to speak words that are pleasing to you and beneficial to others. May our words be a source of life and blessing, not death and destruction. In Jesus’ name, Amen
