Can we talk about how shopping brand-new at a standard mall his actually the most boring, overpriced experience ON EARTHHH!?!?
Seriously. You walk into a typical retail store, everything looks like a plastic-wrapped corporate uniform, the prices are absurd for clothes made out of flimsy synthetic blends, and half the fun is missing.
I live for the hunt. If you look in my closet, you won’t find me paying full price at a traditional retail chain. I only buy from second-hand spots, thrift stores, and overstock outlets. It is genuinely one of my favorite things in the world, and it feels like an absolute adventure every single time!
My Go-To Spots for the Good Stuff
If it’s not pre-loved, vintage, or rescued from overstock, I’m probably not buying it. Here is where you will almost always find me digging for gold:
- ThredUP: This is my online mega-thrift paradise. I love that I can sit on my phone, filter strictly by materials (give me all the cotton, linen, and wool), and score amazing pieces without having to physically dig through endless racks if I don’t feel like it.
- Depop & Vinted: Absolutly AMAZINGGG for unique finds, vintage gems, and everyday staples. It’s like browsing the coolest closets across the country from your couch, and finding a rare piece that nobody else has is unmatched.
- eBay: Never sleep on eBay. If you are looking for a specific vintage jacket, a discontinued style, or solid natural fibers, you can search it down to the exact SKU and score incredible deals.
- Goodwill & Local Thrift Shops: The classic, unbeatable treasure hunt. Going into a thrift store with no expectations and walking out with a heavy-duty wool sweater or a gorgeous vintage dress for seven dollars is an unbeatable high.
- Plato’s Closet & Local Consignment Shops: Perfect for finding trendy, modern pieces that teenagers and young adults wore twice and got tired of. It’s pre-vetted, clean, and ridiculously cheap compared to buying retail is you are looking for the most trendy pieces!
- Marshalls, Ross, and Overstock Outlets: When I do want something brand new, I hit the discount outlets. Rescuing clothes that were overproduced and giving them a home before they end up tossed elsewhere? Count me in. Plus, finding high-end brands hidden on a Ross rack for a fraction of the cost feels like winning a game.
Why It’s the Absolute Best Way to Shop
Beyond just saving a ton of money, shopping this way changes the entire experience of getting dressed:
- It’s a literal adventure: You never know what you’re going to find. A standard mall gives you the exact same inventory in every city. Thrift stores and clearance outlets are pure chaos in the best way possible—you have to search, look at tags, feel the fabrics, and hunt for your size. When you score, it feels earned.
- The quality is miles ahead: Older clothes, vintage pieces, and even overstock items from past seasons were often built with way better stitching and sturdier fabrics than the fast-fashion trash being pumped out today.
- It keeps good things out of landfills: Millions of tons of wearable, perfectly good clothing get thrown away every year just because trends change. Buying second-hand or clearing out overstock means you’re voting for a system that actually uses what’s already here instead of demanding more plastic-based junk.
- Your style is actually yours: When you thrift and mix outlet finds, you don’t look like an algorithm or a mannequin in a store window. Your wardrobe actually tells a story.
Life is way too short to wear boring, overpriced clothes straight off a synchronized rack. Go hit a thrift store, scroll through an online second-hand shop, and go on a treasure hunt. Your closet—and your wallet—will thank you! Have YOU found any amazing finds second-hand? Where is your favorite place to shop?
